health teacher Kathy Nalley-Schembra was recently inducted
into the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association
Volleyball Hall of Fame. She was the head coach at Roncalli
High School for 37 years and the only coach in school
history prior to this 2008 season. Roncalli Principal Chuck
Weisenbach comments, "Kathy deserves all the recognition she
gets for having built one of the state's most respected and
most successful volleyball programs. No one was ever going
to outwork Kathy. Her teams were always well prepared and
represented the school in exemplary fashion." She currently serves as
the department chair of Health/Physical Education at
Roncalli High School, where she teaches Health, Child
Development, and Driver Education. To her students, she
conveys the importance of taking up "favorite causes", as
Kathy is an avid supporter of the fight against breast
cancer, being a survivor herself. Her personal volleyball
accolades include Indianapolis Metro coach of the year seven
times, Indiana South Coach of the year in 2005, and ICGSA's
State 3A Coach of the year in 2006. She has been featured in
Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd. Amassing an
incredible 900 plus wins in her career puts her as the
second "winningest" coach in Indiana Volleyball history. But
as always, she would share that all of her accomplishments
would not have been possible without the hard work and
dedication of her assistant coaches and players over the
years. In her tenure at
Roncalli, her teams have won five Marion County
Championships, 10 Indianapolis City Championships, 24
Sectional, 11 Regional, four Semi-State and three IHSAA
State Championships. It is easy to see why she is recognized
by her peers as one of the finest volleyball coaches in the
state. Kathy has been fortunate
to have matriculated some great athletes, coaching 31
All-State performers, 77 All-City, 20 All-County, 11 Indiana
All-Stars, the 2006 Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year,
and the National Setter of the Year. Kathy and her husband
Larry have four children, three grandchildren and a fourth
one on the way in January. She retired as Head Volleyball
Coach for the Rebels after 37 seasons in order to watch her
favorite volleyball player ever, her daughter, Kaylee, play
at Ball State, her alma mater, this year.
