Reader
feels city of Southport's needs not being met
To the
Editor,
I am distressed
at the abominable operation of the City of
Southport government since January, which is
contrary to "government by the people and for the
people." Mayor Thoman's irresponsible spending of
taxpayers' dollars with the sanction of the
Southport City Council since taking office is
appalling.
The
checks-and-balances system of government in
Southport has not worked since January. I will say
that Councilman Rose Harrison has had the gumption
to oppose Mayor Thoman's irresponsibility. Mayor
Thoman's attempt at empire building and dictatorial
attitude is doomed to fail.
Mayor Thoman, of
course, has blamed former City of Southport Mayor
Nannette Tunget for the present financial woes of
the City of Southport. I believe that Mayor
Tunget's 17 years of managing the City of Southport
within its budget and without debt speaks for
itself.
The thought of
raising taxes for the hard-working families and
retirees of Southport never entered her mind.
Perhaps Mayor Tunget's success was because Almighty
God was at her side in and out of the City Council
meeting.
I truly hope
that responsible government returns to the City of
Southport. The faces of the five councilmen are
actually the faces of approximately 1,800 Southport
residents. Serve them well.
It should be
obvious to anyone that the City of Southport is not
being served well when the well-respected Teri
Mathews, Southport Clerk Treasurer of 16 years, as
well as the City Attorney resign and five
councilmen walk out of a City Council
meeting.
